Five Main Aspects of Tae Kwon-Do

Pattern (Tul)

A pattern is a series of fundamental movements set together in a logical sequence of defence and attack against imaginary opponents. The pattern is most commonly used to allow a student to be assessed at his / her grading promotion examination. There are a total of 24 patterns taking the student from beginner to 6th Degree Black belt. One pattern must be mastered for each grade up to 1st Degree Black belt, then 3 patterns for each degree examination. Each pattern has a link with the history and culture of the Korean people, through its name and diagram it scribes on the floor during its performance.

Sparring (Matsoki)

During sparring the imaginary opponent is replaced with a real opponent so the student can actually defend against a live attack and counter to an exact target presented by an opponent. To start the student learns the procedures of very strictly controlled sparring in the shape of 3 step, 2 step and 1 step sparring. Thses form a basis for effective self-defence against a sudden attack. Free sparring is a system of attack and counter attack against a moving target with few parameters guiding where and how to attack. It tends to be very fast and teachers the student how to move in defence and attack. It also promotes tenacity and courage.

Power (Wee Ryok)

TaeKwon-Do being the most powerful of the martial arts has to be controlled, thus no contact is allowed in the sparring unless very senior grades wish to participate in light contact sparring by mutual consent. Therefore the student needs an alternative target. Tae Kwon-Do provides a choice of target to replace the human opponent. The student can strike either a 12" x 12" x 1" piece of pine or more commonly a specially designed plastic break board. This allow the student to test and perfect a full power technique against a measure resistance. This gives confidence to the student in that his or her techniques work and provide an examinable test.

Theory

Tae Kwon-Do cannot be simply copied, it has to be studied under authentic Instructors from International Tae Kwon-Do Federation. As described by definition Tae Kwon-Do is a science, and an exact science. In the theory section the student learns a code of conduct which should become part of his life. Courtesy, Integrity, Perseverance, Self-control, Indomitable spirit also the student will learn about the history of Tae Kwon-Do and its controlling bodies. Tae Kwon-Do as a science has been written down explaining all the techniques and the theories behind the methods of movement. This is not an ordinary book; it is a 15 volume Encyclopeadia.

Special Techniques

These are very advanced techniques utiliting multi-target attack mainly for display purposes. These techniques show the clear superiority of the Tae Kwon-Do student over and above all other martial artists.
